THE BEST PEDIATRIC DENTAL CARE PRIORITIZES PATIENT COMFORT AND POSITIVE EXPERIENCES

Sedation dentistry makes all the difference.

At Greater Houston Pediatric Dentistry, our team of dental professionals are committed to helping every child feel at safe and comfortable during every dental visit and procedure.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the process of using medication before and during dental procedures in order to relieve pain, anxiety and discomfort. Sedation dentistry is not necessarily the same as anesthesia. During some types of sedation dentistry, the patient can remain conscious though in a relaxed or sedated state.

If your child is anxious or fearful regarding dental treatment or procedures, sedation dentistry may be the right option to help your child comfortably receive the dental treatment they need for a healthy, happy smile.

Is sedation dentistry safe for children?

When used properly and under the care of an experienced medical provider, sedation dentistry can be safely administered to children.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)

Laughing gas helps the patient relax while remaining conscious so that the dentist can communicate with them and cooperate together to complete the treatment. The amount of nitrous oxide administered is closely monitored and the patient is always given 100% oxygen immediately following treatment. After dental treatment with laughing gas, the patient is fee to return to school or normal activities.

Light Sedation

Oral sedation, or light conscious sedation, is a combination of sedatives and anesthetics administered orally in our office and prior to dental treatment. Light sedation allows the patient to respond to verbal commands and remain conscious. During oral sedation, vital signs are closely monitored throughout treatment because your child's safety is our top priority.

Deep Sedation

Deep sedation is a deep conscious sedation administered via an IV in our office by an anesthesiologist. When IV sedation is used, the anesthesiologist closely monitors your child throughout the entire procedure while the dentist and our team of dental professionals completes the treatment.

Hospital Dentistry

For patients in need of additional anesthesia during dental treatment, Greater Houston Pediatric Dentistry also offers dental treatment in the hospital under general anesthesia. Dental treatment in the hospital is completed as an outpatient surgery, meaning that your child can go home the same day. Board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Linh Luu, is on staff at Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital where hospital dentistry can be administered.
