One of the easiest ways to help prevent cavities is by being cautious in our interactions with our precious infants and toddlers. When an adult has active tooth decay, he/ she can pass it on through saliva. Very young children are the most affected by this, as they do not start to colonize bacteria until the first tooth erupts. This is the most sensitive time for exposure to bad oral bacteria. The cause of cavities is of course multifactorial, along with many other factors, including oral hygiene and diet.
Changing our health practices as mothers and caregivers can make a big difference is oral health and set the stage for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Next time, think twice before you share the same spoon or water bottle with your babies!
