Proper oral hygiene habits should start at a young age, and it is important to understand that children always need help learning and developing these skills. Brushing teeth is a habit parents need to begin early in their child’s life - even before the child is able to fully participate independently. In fact, parents can and should help their children understand and build healthy habits as soon as their first tooth erupts.

While there are different aspects to healthy oral hygiene habits for kids, brushing teeth is absolutely essential. Introduce toothbrushing early so that children are comfortable incorporating this important habit into their daily routines. To be sure you are brushing your child’s teeth correctly, follow the instructions below.
Choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste for your child.
Choose the right toothbrush. Choose a toothbrush that is designed for children.
Children should use a child-size, soft-bristled toothbrush. While there are many designs and colors to choose from, we recommend that children use a toothbrush with a non-slip grip that is easy for little fingers to hold and maneuver.
When brushing the teeth of a young child (0-18, use a soft child’s toothbrush or a soft wet cloth to wipe over the teeth and gums.
Use the right amount of toothpaste
For children 0-18 months of age - use only water, no toothpaste
For children 18 months to 6 years old, use a small dab or smear of low-fluoride toothpaste about the size of a pea.
Children ages 6 and up should use a pea-sized amount of standard fluoride toothpaste.
How to brush your child's teeth
Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the teeth.
Use gentle and short, tooth-sized strokes.
To clean the surface of each tooth, move the toothbrush back and forth across the tooth, being careful to clean the outside, inside and chewing surfaces. To clean the back of the front teeth, use the same technique but hold the toothbrush vertically.
Brush the tongue. The tongue harbors bacteria and needs to be brushed thoroughly just as often as the teeth.
Rinse and spit! Have your child pause and spit periodically during brushing, then rinse thoroughly and spit after they finish.
Properly cleaning the teeth using the techniques described above should take about 2 minutes.
Teaching Your Child
Talk about the importance of tooth brushing. We recommend talking to your child about the importance of having healthy teeth. Explain to your child how our teeth help us eat and grow strong. Let them know that brushing their teeth gets rid of the sticky bacteria that attack our teeth.
Lead by Example
Brush your teeth together - or if you are still brushing your child’s teeth for him or her, brush your own teeth first and then brush theirs. Making silly faces almost always helps!
